A great opportunity to serve your community!
Like any other volunteer organization, we are always
looking for new members. Firefighters are outfitted with turnout gear,
i.e., coat, pants, boots, helmet, pagers, etc.
all at the expense of the fire company.
Not everyone has to run into a burning building to be
helpful to the fire company. In fact a majority of the activities do
not involve fire related tasks. Ensuring the fire service is ready to
respond is probably the single most import thing. Plus there
are many other activities involved with being a volunteer,
such
as:
| |
Working our annual carnival |
| |
Helping with fundraisers |
| |
Preparing for our annual Santa visit |
| |
Helping with fire prevention at schools |
| |
Cleaning the trucks |
| |
Grant writing |

VEST - Volunteer Education, Service, and Training Scholarship Program |
| |
In Allegheny County, volunteer firefighters protect over 860,000
people. In addition, volunteer firefighters save the County an estimated
$60
million dollars a year. However, the recruitment and retention of volunteer
firefighters is a challenge that fire companies face nationwide, and it
is no less true for the 214
volunteer fire companies in Allegheny County. This challenge directly impacts
local communities, as adequately staffed and trained volunteer fire companies
are essential to ensuring a safe and well-protected community.
The Fire VEST Scholarship Program is modeled after Project V-FIRE in
Erie County, NY. Both programs have been developed as tools to help
recruit
new and younger volunteer firefighters. In addition, Fire VEST is made
possible through a partnership between the Allegheny County Fire Academy,
the STEP FORWARD Volunteer Initiative, and the Community College of
Allegheny County (CCAC).
The Fire VEST scholarship program provides a limited number of full
tuition scholarships to eligible new recruits within Allegheny County's
volunteer
rITe companies. For scholarship recipients, there is no limitation
as to the academic program the Fire VEST recruit can enter at any
of CCAC's four
campuses.
In addition to maintaining volunteer activity, firefighter training
levels, and certain academic objectives during their course of
study, Fire VEST
recruits must commit to a service obligation of five (5) years
following their acceptance into their sponsoring agency.
This is a pilot program. Depending on its success, as well as demonstrated
community needs, the Fire VEST Advisory Board will consider amendments
and modifications to the program's design, such as the possible
inclusion of other public safety volunteer groups.

more information from the Allegheny County website.
