About Us |
| |
The Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company of Allegheny
County, established in
1946, is located about 6 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, PA.
Members of our fire company are on a volunteer status.
We operate out of 1 station that houses 8 pieces of fire apparatus.
We protect about 3,600 residents in an area of approximately
10 square miles.
Ohio Township itself is mostly residential with many businesses, two
major
interstates (I-79 and I-279), three churches and even a landing strip.
Our ISO rating is 5 in areas with hydrants and 9 in areas without hydrants.
We also provide protection to neighboring Sewickley Hills Borough, and
are
assisted on certain calls by neighboring fire departments.

History |
| |
On August 13, 1946, 19 men got together in the basement
of first president William Dornburg to discuss a fire company
in Ohio Township. They all pitched in $1.00 each to buy
stationery and necessary supplies to carry on the meetings.
With that $19.00 the fire company was established along
with other fundraisers, to raise the money for a new truck,
which was purchased in January, 1948 for the cost of $750.00
from nearby Laurel Gardens VFD.

In 1947 the fire company elected its
first chief, Robert Wepner, only one of 5 fire chiefs to
date, to serve the Ohio Township VFC. The fire company was
located at the Eugene Thompson barn which is now the Ohio
Township Municipal Building on Roosevelt road. John Holzer
was elected chief in 1948, and served until 1957.
From the late 40's to the early 50's
the fire company was looking for a permanent home. In 1954-55,
the new property on Roosevelt Road was purchased which is
where the fire company is now located. John Thompson was
elected chief in 1958, and served until 1961.

By the time the 60's rolled around,
the fire company had 2 pumpers, 1 tanker, and 1 brush truck,
which is still in service today. The 60's also saw our remaining
two chiefs elected into office, in 1962, Terry Coyle was
elected chief and served until 1963. In 1964, Thomas Larkin
was elected chief and still proudly serves the Fire Company
to the present day.

The 70's brought about many of our
trucks that are still in service today, including Engine
7 (1977), Engine 5 and Tanker 9 (1979). By the end of the
70's the fire company consisted of 6 vehicles. Thomas Larkin,
Chief.
In 1984, the fire company participated
in Basic Vehicle Rescue Classes, which required the need
for a Rescue Truck, so, in 1987 a Rescue Truck was purchased
and put into commission, also a Special Operations vehicle
was fabricated, and is still in service. Thomas Larkin,
Chief.
